Times change, but above all trends change history. And here is that the historic British brand MG – a symbol of sportiness – cannot return to the Italian market if not two electrified crossovers: the EHS plug-in hybrid and the electric ZS E. orbit of the Saic group, one of the giants of the Chinese automotive market, focused on electric mobility. For the two cars, the sales targets are ambitious: 2,600 units by 2021 and 8,000 by 2022 (with a share destined for company fleets of 20% for the first year and 30% for the second). For 2023, however, the manufacturer aims to reach a 1% market share, thanks also to the arrival of new models, almost all electric. Moreover, the intentions of the manufacturer are summed up by the slogan ‘Electric for everyone’. For now, there are 20 MG dealerships, mainly located in Northern Italy; by the end of the year, however, the showrooms should double and the network will also be extended to the South.
Rich equipment The plug-in EHS is equipped with a 1.5-liter 162hp turbo petrol engine combined with a 122hp electric powertrain with a 16.6kWh lithium-ion battery. The 10-speed automatic transmission. The 3.7 kW on-board system allows the battery to be fully charged in about 4 and a half hours, while help comes from the regenerative braking system. The dimensions place it at the center of segment C: 457 cm long, 188 cm wide and 166 cm high. The cargo capacity of 448 liters, which can be extended up to 1,375 liters when the rear seats are folded down. The 12.3 “digital dashboard and 10.1” touchscreen for infotainment stand out on the dashboard. The rich equipment: from level 2 assisted driving – the spearhead of the ADAS package – to leather-covered seats, from the panoramic roof to the multimedia system with smartphone connectivity, from the electric tailgate to the heated front seats.
Clean design The external line is characterized by soft stylistic features, with a large front grille surrounded by chrome plating that connect it to feline headlights – equipped with “catlike” LED daytime running lights – and gray protections at the base of the bumper. The most classic rear area, with the large tailgate under which the double tailpipes stand out. The MG Ehs price list starts at 35,850 for the Excite version with pastel paint, which becomes 36,500 euros by opting for the metallic color. The Exclusive set-up starts at 38,350 with pastel paint and 39,000 euros for the ‘metallic’. The same Exclusive, but with red interiors, has a price list of 39,350 euros and 40,000 euros, again based on the two previous options. With the Ecobonus and the additional discount of the House, prices are reduced by 6,940 in case of scrapping and by 3,720 without.
ZS EV: 263 km of autonomy The ZS EV instead a segment B: 431 cm long, 181 cm wide and 165 cm high. The electric motor has 143 HP of power, with a battery with a capacity of 44.5 kWh, which according to the company ensures a range of 263 km. About eight hours to recharge, in the home box. The dashboard – like, in general, the entire passenger compartment – built with quality materials, well assembled. The features include an 8 “touchscreen, an automatic gearbox with three modes (Eco, Normal and Sport) and a rear view camera. As with the EHS there is the Stargazer sunroof and panoramic. The price list starts at 33,900 euros. The warranty offered by MG for 7 years or 150,000 km and applies to the entire vehicle, including components. If future plans do not foresee an expansion of engines or versions for the two novices in the short term, on the other hand the manufacturer has ensured that it will expand the offer to other types, and will return to the sports sector in 2023.
