The Millers’ hopes of remaining in the league this season were hit by a 1-0 loss to Coventry on Thursday.

Warne’s men were outclassed by the Sky Blues, who were on the side immediately above them in the table and advanced six points.

There were extenuating circumstances for Rotherham, who was in action just 48 hours earlier when they beat QPR.

Their fatigue was evident as they were second best throughout and finally went to the lead of Leo Ostigard in the 70th minute.

It would have been much worse without goalkeeper Viktor Johansson, who made a number of vital saves.

The Millers don’t have time to rest as they are back in action on Sunday when Birmingham heads to another critical game.

Warne accepts that his team deserved to lose to Coventry but will try to take his side.

“I think we got what we deserved. Coventry was much better than us at night.

“They started the game on the front foot and dominated us, which I don’t like to say. Viktor kept us in the game.

“We looked a little tired. I can’t complain about the score. We will try to collect them and go back there on Sunday but it was a big blow.

“We have to play these games. It’s just a shame for us with the order they come in. I would have liked to play this game with more rest.

“We didn’t have a lot of threat. Collectively, we just weren’t great. We didn’t create anything and it’s disappointing.

“The guys always know they’re in real shambles and I hope their character shines.”
