Hyundai prepares WRC hybrid driver for 2022 season Car News

Hyundai has started testing its 2022 World Rally Championship car, making the historic switch to a hybrid drivetrain that meets new sporting regulations.

All WRC participants are required to use an electrified powertrain from 2022, with the electric motor used for motorless driving in the paddock and on stretches of road.

Hyundai’s “ Rally1 ” contender is based on the hot new i20 N hatchback, rather than the standard i20 its current pilot uses as a basis.

Aside from the styling and branding changes that the exchange will bring, it will remain technically a largely familiar proposition, with propulsion primarily provided by the same turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine that powers the current car.

The hybrid system, which will also be used in the 2022 Toyota and Ford M-Sport cars, includes an electric motor on the rear axle producing 134 hp and 133 lb-ft, and a 3.9 kWh battery that will allow short runs. electric operation only when the the car is not driven angrily.

It is part of a series of far-reaching revisions for top-level rally cars in 2022, with further changes aimed primarily at improving crash protection and body stiffness.

The first round of public testing took place in the south of France, following a closed-door development program at Hyundai’s R&D center in Germany.

The rider will now be tested in various locations across Europe to ensure his ability on all terrains that feature in the WRC calendar.
