Two men were arrested after police raided a major cannabis operation in a former bingo hall.
South Yorkshire Font (SYP) entered cannabis factories worth an estimated £ 2.18million at Empire Bingo in Swinton Road, Mexborough, near Doncaster.
Two men, aged 29 and 38, were arrested on suspicion of producing Class B drugs and are still in detention.
Photos showed a large room filled with plants – more than around 2,000 – and police used a power saw to break into the abandoned building.
The building is also known as Gala Bingo, according to the Doncaster Free Press.
Tuesday morning’s raid followed “weeks of work by the Doncaster West Neighborhood Police Team,” the force said.
Inspector Adrian Luscombe, whose team led the operation, explained: “In Mexborough and around Doncaster we have a strong focus on fighting organized crime gangs (OCGs).
“The criminal groups that operate in our communities cause misery for many, and we relentlessly pursue those who control their activity.
“Cannabis farms generate essential income which stimulates OCG’s activity, it is by no means a ‘harmless’ drug.
“Often extremely vulnerable people are recruited to take care of the crops, living in appalling conditions full of fear.
“For this reason, we are investing significant resources to stop this activity and identify those responsible.
“If you have any information that could help us identify who created these farms, it is essential that you come forward and tell us what you know.”
