“What’s the point?” Sheffield Wednesday youngster Osaze Urhoghide describes difficult experience with Tony Pulis UK News

The 20-year-old defender, who burst onto the scene early last year before having to spend several months with a knee injury, had to wait until the end of January to make his first appearance of the 2020/21 season.

It was only after Pulis was sacked after just 10 games and replaced by longtime goalkeeper Neil Thompson. Pulis’ disastrous reign saw the Owls win just one game.

“I was kicked out of the squad when Tony Pulis came in,” Urhoghide said on his YouTube channel, admitting that any dialogue between him and his then manager was minimal.

Osaze Urhoghide, popular defender for Sheffield Wednesday.

“He had a team he would choose already and I wasn’t really playing during that time. I was on the bench a few times, sometimes the extra man and it was a sad time to be honest.

“Football is playing and when you’re not playing you do all you can to get into the team and you don’t get what you deserve sometimes.”

The youngster stepped in and became a key part of the first-team dressing room in 2021, making 17 appearances including 13 starts.

Admitting that he felt he had learned a lot from the experience under Pulis, he described how mentally difficult it was in stages.

He said: “I felt like I had just got on the train, like I was never going to get on the team, it was like ‘What’s the use?’ I was working hard, I was trying to do my extras, I was trying to keep my physical shape. It was hard.

“My hard work has not paid off. It wasn’t until I left the club that the hard work started and I was ready when the opportunity presented itself.

“I look back now and if I didn’t do what I did even when I was weak, I wouldn’t have had the success I would have had when I came back.”

Urhoghide’s contract is ongoing in the coming weeks and is a player many Wednesday fans are hoping to stay at S6.
