For too many people in the city afterwards, it was business as usual and still involved giving yourself big bonuses. Claims that their pay had indeed reduced fell on deaf ears because their pay, even when it went down, was so far below that of ordinary people.
The fact that neither of them was ready to face criticism, to explain their role, added to the feeling of arrogance and disdain. I well remember the bewilderment at Goldman Sachs that their then leader’s words, “We are doing the work of God,” ridiculed them. They just didn’t get it.
