Calls on South Yorkshire cops for full protection kit during protests after cop is destroyed UK News

It comes after a policeman was punched in the face after being attacked by protesters at Manchester United’s Old Trafford football stadium.

The officer injured earlier this month suffered ‘life-changing injuries’ and narrowly avoided losing his eye sight.

The South Yorkshire Police Federation, which represents the rank and file officers, said “situations can turn hostile in an instant”.

Steve Kent, Chairman of the South Yorkshire Branch of the Police Federation

President Steve Kent said: “We need to stop worrying about perception and focus on protecting our officers. They have the kit – or at least should have it – so they should wear it.

“In the past, I have heard of too many occasions when officers were not in public order PPE, the situation changed so quickly that they did not have time to go and collect them. kit, and we end up with agents in very vulnerable positions.

“The recent examples from London and Old Trafford make this perfectly clear and show that situations can turn hostile in an instant. It may not be popular in hot weather, but officers should be in their gear from the first minute when dealing with protests or potential public order situations to ensure they are as safe as possible.

Stu Berry, chairman of the Greater Manchester Police Federation, said: “We see relentless attacks from colleagues wearing little more than a flat cap and hi-vis jacket and with a baton for protection.

“Our officers must be properly protected and appropriately equipped with public order equipment – including helmets and shields – when monitoring these protesters.

“This will by no means be the last protest British police officers will face as the nation unblocks itself, and our brave colleagues bear the brunt of the public’s frustration. They must have the appropriate kit to protect themselves.

“Officers are not – and never will be – punching bags for people demonstrating for their cause. We have seen too many images of police officers during protests in recent weeks with blood spouting from their faces

“How many more do we need to see?” How badly does a policeman have to be hurt before doing anything? “
