More than half of UK businesses don’t use social media to promote themselves, survey finds Business News

Six in ten businesses are still not using social media to increase their customer base, according to a survey.

Although it is one of the most popular forms of communication, a study of 500 small and medium business owners found that more than a quarter do not post on Facebook.

Another four in 10 don’t make the most of Instagram to market their products and services, while only two in 10 post on LinkedIn – the UK’s largest professional networking website.

It also appeared that 40% had no idea how to advertise their business.

Meanwhile, others have gone so far as to say that they don’t know how to create an online profile, while a few don’t understand SEO (Search Engine Optimization).

As a result, nearly a third seek advice from others, with friends and family being the first port of call.

Rob Wass, director and co-founder of digital marketing platform Adzooma, who commissioned the research, said: “We are currently experiencing a digital transformation like no other, so digital marketing and online advertising are more important than ever.

“We have experienced a global pandemic and it has become much more important for businesses to go online.

“It’s not necessarily surprising that about half of small business owners don’t know how to best market their business, because for a lot of people it’s complicated and difficult given that they aren’t. digital marketers.

“However, to be successful, businesses have to be online and there are platforms and solutions available to make it happen.”

The survey found that 37% see a website as the most important marketing tool for people to find them or find out who they are.

A third value has a profile presence on social media, while others rely on online reviews and an offline presence as a means of promoting their business.

But nearly half of owners surveyed through OnePoll admit they could have made more sales if they had marketed themselves properly online.

David Sharpe, Director and Co-Founder of Adzooma, added, “Marketing your business online to be seen and gain greater customer exposure is so invaluable in today’s marketplace.

“Not having an online presence at all can pose a huge risk to sales and long-term relationships. It’s understandable that business owners struggle with this part of the process because they aren’t necessarily marketers. “
