Amazon will no longer reject some applicants who test positive for cannabis amid a shake up in company drug policy.

The new measures, however, do not apply to positions that are regulated by the US Department of Transport.

In a message to colleagues earlier this week, Amazon Worldwide Consumer CEO Dave Clark said, “We are adjusting our drug testing policy.

“In the past, like many employers, we have banned people from working at Amazon if they tested positive for marijuana use.”

He added, “However, given the evolution of state laws in the United States, we have changed course.”

Mr Clark said that in the future Amazon will treat cannabis the same as alcohol consumption.

The e-commerce giant led by Jeff Bezos will continue to perform impaired driving checks at work and “test all drugs and alcohol” after any on-site incident. .

Amazon has also said it will support ongoing efforts to legalize marijuana at the federal level.

Mr Clark said the company will actively support the Marijuana Opportunity Reinvestment and Expungement Act (MORE Act) 2021, which also aims to clear criminal records and invest in communities affected by drugs.

Amazon was hit with a proposed class action lawsuit, claiming the company was violating a New York City law by testing applicants for jobs at local cannabis facilities, according to a report from the Westlaw Legal Research Department.

The company does not allow sales of marijuana on its platform.

While many states in the United States have legalized cannabis use, employers have so far largely refused to work with the industry because the drug is still a federally classified substance.
