Euro 2020: a year behind the tournament made English fans even more savored | UK News

It was the occasion for the English fans to meet at Wembley for the first time in a very long time. And how they enjoyed it.

COVID the restrictions meant attendance was limited to just 22,500 people and everyone had to produce proof of vaccination or a negative test result before entering and taking their seats.

For hours before kickoff against Croatia, Wembley Way was buzzing with fans chanting old favorites, with many retro sports jerseys from Euro 96 and other tournaments.

“It’s just amazing to be back, after everything the country has been through we are going to enjoy every minute,” one England fan told me as she walked towards the ground.

Croatia ended England’s World Cup dream in Russia three years ago, but they rarely threatened Gareth Southgate’s team.

On the contrary, the one year delay in this tournament may have helped the young English stars to mature a bit.

The FA had asked fans before the match not to boo the players who knelt before kick-off, and while the overwhelming majority applauded their heroes, a few dozen outside the pitch chanted “L ‘ England, on their knees “.

But nothing could eclipse a fantastic start for England, their very first victory in an opening match of the European Championships, in 10th time of the request.

It is only a start in this competition, but England know that a victory against Scotland Friday they will advance to the round of 16 and from there anything can happen.

As one fan put it: “We deserve a decent summer”.
