Edwin Poots resigned as head of the DUP after less than a month in his post.
Speaking on Thursday evening, Mr Poots said: “I have asked the chairman of the party to start an electoral process within the party to allow the election of a new leader of the Democratic Unionist party.
“The Party has asked me to stay in office until my successor is elected.
“It has been a difficult time for the Party and the country and I have conveyed to the President my determination to do all I can so that trade unionism and Northern Ireland can progress to a stronger position.”
