Anticipation and excitement had built up across town and the rest of England as the game approached as Gareth Southgate’s heroes – including Sheffield guys Kyle Walker, Harry Maguire and Dominic Calvert -Lewin – were preparing to face Italy at Wembley Stadium.
It was the first time the England men’s team had made a major tournament final in 55 years – but their agonizing wait for glory continues.
Sheffield’s pubs, bars and lounges were filled with jubilant fans rejoicing after a difficult 16 months brought on by the coronavirus pandemic – and one city street was even renamed after one of the stars of the England team.
