UK data watchdog officials raided two homes and seized computers as part of an investigation into leaked CCTV footage of disgraced former Health Secretary Matt Hancock kissing a departmental assistant .
The Information Commissioner’s office said his teams searched two addresses in the south of England on Thursday and took computer equipment and other electronic devices.
This follows a complaint from the EMCOR group, which provides video surveillance services to the Ministry of Health and Social Affairs, which alleged that images were taken from the ministry’s video surveillance system without consent.
CCTV footage and footage of Mr Hancock kissing his assistant Gina Coladangelo were then published by The Sun newspaper on June 25.
Mr. Hancock then resigned from his post as health secretary after admit breaking COVID rules he himself had contributed to the design.
Steve Eckersley, ICO Director of Investigations, said: “It is vital that all people, including government department employees and members of the public who interact with them, have confidence in the protection of their personal data.
“In these circumstances, the ICO aims to react quickly and effectively to investigate when there is a risk that others have illegally obtained personal data.
“We have an ongoing investigation and will not comment further until it is completed.”
The Department of Health and Welfare previously said a CCTV camera in Mr Hancock’s office was installed as part of renovations in 2017.
However, Mr Hancock, who became health secretary in 2018, was not made aware of the camera.
His replacement as Health Secretary Sajid Javid has since said the camera has been disabled by the department.
