COVID-19: Automaker Rolls-Royce “Approaches Tipping Point” Regarding Worker Absence COVID Alert | Economic news

Automaker Rolls-Royce said it was “nearing a tipping point” due to workers having to self-isolate and may have to cut production in half if the trend continues.

The company, owned by Germany’s BMW, said it was “extremely concerned” about the number of employees at its Goodwood, West Sussex manufacturing site who have been ordered to stay home due to alerts from the NHS Test and Trace app.

Meanwhile, the UK Nissan plant was hit by the same issue with more than 700 workers at the Sunderland site reportedly self-isolating.

Ministers were urged to act after union Unite said factories across the country were on the verge of closing due to worker shortages.

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars said in a statement that it is currently operating at full production.

He said: “We operate a two shift system and each car is hand built to customer order.

“We are extremely concerned about the number of employees at our manufacturing facility who have been forced to self-isolate after being notified by the NHS Test and Trace app.

“We are approaching a critical point – it will be necessary to reduce our two teams to one if the number of self-isolates continues to increase, thus halving production.

“It would be deeply damaging to the expectations of our customers and to our business.”
