As soon as the wheels of his skateboard spin in competition in Tokyo, 13-year-old Sky Brown will make history. Beat a record that has lasted for nearly a century.
It was in 1928 that ManchesterSwimmer Margery Hinton represented Great Britain at the Olympic Games in Amsterdam at 13.
Sky Brown is slightly younger, just turned 13, and is expected to be one of the stars of the Tokyo Games as skateboarding makes its Olympic debut.
Not all skateboarders want their sport to mainstream, but Sky and her teammate, Bombette Martin, 15, are on the verge of it.
The teenager, who lives California and has a father from England, told Sky News she never really felt any nerves or pressure when she was on its board.
“No, not for skateboarding… I just want to do my best and see what happens. I’m not really nervous. I’m just excited,” she said.
Sky had a terrible skateboarding accident last summer in which she fell 15 feet and broke her skull and broke several bones.
In a post on her busy social media from her hospital bed, she made a promise.
“I’m just going to get up and push even harder,” she wrote.
This is exactly what she did.
“Falling is part of life,” she told Sky News.
“You’re going to fall sometimes, but you have to get up and start over and that made me stronger and made me want to go harder,” she said.
GB Team Skateboarding Director Darren Pearcy, who oversees Sky’s participation in Tokyo, added, “Yeah, she’s got that!
“She’s a natural talent. But I’m always careful how I talk about her because I also know how hard she works.”
A similar work ethic also drove Bombette Martin, another Team GB skateboarding qualifier, to Tokyo.
