Lewis Hamilton wins British Grand Prix after collision with Max Verstappen who was taken to hospital | UK News

Lewis Hamilton won the British Grand Prix after a race that saw him collide with F1 title rival Max Verstappen in the first lap.

Verstappen crashed when Mercedes driver Hamilton dipped his interior at the entrance to Copse at 180 mph, with the British driver scoring the rear of the Red Bull car.

The Belgian-Dutch pilot lost control and crashed into the wall in the high-speed crash at Silverstone.

Hamilton was fined 10 seconds for causing a collision.

Verstappen, 23, remained in his cockpit for several moments before exiting and was taken to an ambulance.

“Is Max okay?” Hamilton said over the radio. “He got out of the car,” replied Hamilton racing engineer Peter Bonnington.

Hamilton told his Mercedes team that the corner position was his and the collision was not his fault.

“I was way ahead in that,” said Hamilton. “I was completely inside, it was my cue, and he turned on me.”

Red Bull said Verstappen was “taken to a local hospital for further precautionary testing” after being assessed at the track medical center.

Verstappen took a while to get out of his car but waved to the crowd as he made his way to the medical center.

Hamilton passed Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc just two and a half laps into the race in front of 140,000 spectators at Silverstone.
