Party-goers described the reopening as “like New Years” and said they “missed the buzz” of being away. Images on social media showed nightclub lines erupting with excitement as the clock struck 12 o’clock.

First in line, fundraiser Chloe Waite, 37, said the occasion was “something we will long remember.”

Gabriel Wildsmith, 26, video producer from London, who joined Ms Waite added: “I’ve been here for an hour, I’m really looking forward to it.”

Actor Alex Clarke, 40, told PA: “There is a bit of trepidation and uncertainty around the protocols.

“It is quite dangerous and I do not think anyone, at least a public health specialist, would want to encourage an attitude on the part of the authorities which somehow suggests that the problem is solved. “

The UK is currently experiencing around 50,000 Covid infections per day, but scientists predict that number will rise to 200,000 over the next two months.
