In pictures: hundreds of clubbers line up for nightclubs on Freedom Day UK News

It follows jubilant scenes in the early hours of Monday – aka “Freedom Day” – despite concerns over increasing Covid cases

A huge queue formed outside Digital for the second night since nightclubs were finally allowed to reopen.

Hundreds of excited clubbers lined up outside Newcastle’s nightclub on Monday – the day dubbed ‘Freedom Day’ after England’s Covid restrictions were lifted.

Face masks and social distancing rules have been removed, despite concerns about the increase in infections.

And those worries did little to deter clubbers, who hit the dance floor at midnight a second on Monday as clubs in the city opened for the first time since last March.

And after being closed for 16 months, Monday night’s stages have clearly shown that there is a huge demand as tickets for several shows at Digital are already full.

Some of the acts scheduled to play in the venue over the next few months include superstar DJs like Car Cox, Ben Nicky and Darren Styles.

On Monday it was the turn of North Shields star Patrick Topping who helped reopen the venue, who posted on Facebook that it was “like a dream” to finally welcome the public again.

However, some fear that the latest easing of restrictions could push cases even higher.

Newcastle is already one of the most infected areas in England, while in the north-east cases are currently more than double the national average.

And nationwide, there were nearly 40,000 additional cases confirmed as of Monday – with experts fearing there may be as many as 200,000 cases per day at most.
