But she would lose her footing if she did without it. Becky, 32, chose to save her unborn baby and had her foot amputated three weeks later. She said: “It was a shock but we made the best decision. My foot was quite at risk anyway. Born with spina bifida, she had foot problems before the infection set in.
Becky, from Swansea, said: “It was quite difficult after the amputation. My husband Richard had to be away from work for 10 months to resume my role at home and take care of me. It was a time when I was pretty depressed. I didn’t feel like I could be a real mom.
“I was stuck in that wheelchair and couldn’t do the things I thought I had to do as a new mom.” Five months after giving birth to baby Caitlyn, Becky took her first walk with her: “It was just the best feeling ever.”
She added: “There are months when I have to be in my wheelchair because I cannot put my leg in due to the pain.
“I couldn’t even do the basic things for mom like taking my kids to school. That’s all I wanted to do – be able to take them to school and pick them up. “
Caitlyn is now seven and Becky says she strives to be the best mother she can be for herself and her other daughters Lacey, 13, and Mia, 10, and her stepdaughter, Ruby, 12.
Becky underwent another post-amputation surgery in January, following complications. While recovering, she came into contact with AmpCamp Kids, a group that supports child amputees.
On July 31, Becky aims to climb 2,907-foot Pen-y-Fan Mountain in the Brecon Beacons with 40 parents, friends and other amputees to help pay six child amputees and their families to go to specialized holidays in Tenerife.
She said, “I’ve never been one to exercise too much because of the pain. Some days I have to rest. I can’t do whatever I want.
“I just wanted to do something to push myself and help others. I’m nervous about the climb but even if I have to stop a million times I’ll make it to the top.
“It was a bit of an inspiration to see [the amputee] children and how they approach life with a smile – wow! “
