The Land Rover Defender V8 is back. Until the 1990s, a large gasoline engine was a staple in the Defender lineup, but with the exception of a few special editions since then, it was largely absent from Land Rover’s most versatile vehicle.
Now, however, in this new Defender, the V8 is back. The new Defender V8 can be offered as a short or long wheelbase, 90 or 110. And in both cases, the performance is strong. The V8 is a 5.0-liter supercharged unit developing 518 hp and 461 lb-ft, which is good for 0-62 mph in 4.9 seconds and a top speed of 149 mph.
What it is less good for, perhaps unsurprisingly, is sipping only a little fuel. This is a 19.3 mpg, 330 g / km car. And it’s quite pricey, starting at at least £ 98,575.
But maybe, just maybe, the allure of a big, lewd V8 is worth it? Join Matt Prior as he finds out.
