The search for a man who allegedly drowned in the sea in Brean was called off after search and rescue teams found nothing.

A call to 999 was made shortly after 11 p.m. Friday night by a woman who said she entered the water to save her drowning husband near Brean Down.

After the women’s phone was cut off, two Burnham Area Rescue Boat hovercraft were called in, but a thorough search found nothing and the team was put on hold around 1:30 a.m. on Saturday morning.

The Burnham-on-sea hovercraft said in a statement on Facebook: “A late night call for BARB volunteers when the team was called to Brean at 11:08 pm by the Coast Guard Rescue Team from Burnham alongside the RNLI and the Coast Guard helicopter, following a 999 call to report drowning in the sea.

“The 999 call was made at the police control room by a woman who said she entered the water to rescue her drowning husband near Brean Down, before her phone went missing. chopped off.

“BARB volunteers quickly launched our two hovercraft from Berrow Beach into the dark to join in the search.

“In close collaboration with our fellow Coast Guard, we searched the beach between Brean Down and Burnham, walking the tide line and investigating footprints in the mud and also speaking to several people along from the beach.

“A full and thorough search was undertaken in the mud leading to the water’s edge as the lifeboats and the Coast Guard helicopter searched the water.

“With nothing found and no other information or anyone missing, the search was eventually called off by the Coast Guard control room and our team was demobilized and returned to Burnham around 1.30am.

“BARB’s dedicated team performed a full wash and disinfection, verifying that our equipment was fully ready for service, before heading home for a welcome sleep at 3am.”
