The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for parts of the UK as heavy rain and thunder are expected to strike.
A yellow Met Office weather warning for thunderstorms is in place until 9 p.m. on Saturday July 31, covering the East Midlands, eastern England, London and south-eastern England, the north east of England, south-west of England and Yorkshire and the Humber.
The Met Office said: ‘Although many places will miss them, heavy showers and a few thunderstorms are expected to develop this afternoon over parts of southern and eastern England.
“The showers could bring about 20mm of rain in an hour, and maybe 30 to 40mm in a few hours for a few places, causing possible surface water flooding in places.
“Lightning and hail are more likely to occur in the south-eastern counties of England. Showers and thunderstorms will subside by late evening.
What to expect from this yellow weather warning:
- There is a good chance that the driving conditions will be affected by standing water and possibly hail, which will result in longer travel times by car and bus.
- Delays in train services are possible
- The flooding of some houses and businesses is possible
- Short-term loss of power is possible, as is damage to some buildings or structures due to lightning
What will the weather be like next week?
The Met Office is forecasting sunny spells and showers on Monday (August 2) and Tuesday (August 93) in England and Wales. It will be rather sunny and dry elsewhere, but with cool mornings.
There is then the “risk of heavy showers in many places Wednesday,” adds the Met Office.
Looking towards the middle of next week and through to mid-August, the Met Office says unstable and changing conditions will continue to dominate.

Scattered showers are likely for the most part, with a few thunderstorms likely to develop from them.
Torrential downpours are also likely in some places, with winds remaining generally blustery and temperatures expected to be near average. They may be slightly above average in northern regions.
During the remainder of this period it will likely change to stable conditions, but some showers cannot be excluded, especially in the south-eastern areas.
