Grade A Results Day: Bedford School frequent flyers celebrate as they prepare to head to college Bedford News

Bedford School praised its sixth-grade boys as they prepare to head to the universities of their choice.

And the school is especially proud in this pandemic year that as many as 11 boys have been awarded places to read medicine.

Four others leave for Oxford and Cambridge; and the most popular destinations were Durham University (11), UCL (7), Bath (7) and Exeter (7).

The boys will study degrees ranging from computer science and theology to cancer biology, immunology and architecture at universities in the UK, Germany and the US.

This includes the boys who took the International Baccalaureate, with special mention to high achievers Michael Lee – who will accept his offer to read economics and management at New College, University of Oxford, and Ciaran Zanna – who won the ‘IB this year and will be reading History at the University of St Andrews.

Stephen Simmons, out of school, was delighted to learn that his three A *’s have secured him a place at Kent and Medway Medical School, where he will begin a five-year medical course this fall.

Stephen, who was also National Schools Octathlon Champion and International Schools Medalist in England just before the pandemic, said: “I wanted to do a degree that challenged me. I have always loved science and the personal aspect of medicine was what appealed to me the most.

Max Sogan, who scored four A * and 100 percent in his Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) has been accepted to read physics at St Catherine’s College, University of Oxford, which he hopes will l ‘will help make his dream of becoming an engineer come true.

Max has always been interested in challenging himself – even while in prep school he rowed 72 miles from Bedford to the sea with his brother, father and an elderly Bedfordian to raise money for Bedford Daycare Hospice.

Yaamin Mohamed was “ecstatic” to learn that his first choice offer to study medicine at Queen Mary University in London had been accepted after earning three A * and an A.

Hugh Halsey far exceeded his own expectations with four A *’s in math, biology, chemistry and geography. He will now do a sabbatical in Canada, where he is doing an internship for

Golf researcher Finlay Cummings got his scholarship offer at Harding University, Arkansas, USA, where he will receive college golf coaching to bring his golf to a professional level while studying for a business degree.

Three boys were accepted into the Art Foundation courses of their choice, the preliminary path that will allow them to mature as artists before choosing which art degree to specialize in.

Jonathon Coughlin

Jonathon Coughlin is thrilled with his results, which brought him closer to his dream of working in the music industry with an offer to the University of Surrey on the “Tonmeister” course to study music and sound recording.

Kelan Riddell was offered a place at the University of Liverpool to study geography, an offer he accepted, although with an application still pending for Trinity College, Dublin, he is still waiting before knowing what offer take.

Director James Hodgson said: “We are extremely proud of this promotion. They have worked extremely hard during what has been another hectic school year during the pandemic.

“Their resilience has shown no bounds and they deserve every bit of their academic success. An exciting future awaits these boys; they are good men who leave with many varied interests away from the classroom and a strong set of values. for life, I wish them every success.
