Pret a Manger reinstates bonuses after staff threatened to strike Business News

Pret a Manger has reinstated the bonuses for staff who perform well in customer service after facing backlash.

However, the struggling coffeehouse chain will not reverse the decision to stop paying workers during their breaks.

Some staff members had threatened to strike if temporary pay cuts introduced during the pandemic were not reversed.

Last year, Pret stopped paying staff for their breaks and removed a £ 1 per hour bonus for employees who were highly rated by mystery shoppers. In total, the changes amounted to a pay cut of up to 11 percent.

Pret recently reduced the bonus but to 50 pence an hour, angering staff, most of whom earn the minimum wage of £ 8.91 an hour.

Following criticism for the move, Pret turned around on Thursday. Managing Director Panou Christou has written to employees to inform them that the bonus will rise to £ 1 per hour.

“We have taken your comments into account and have revised our decision,” said Mr Christou.

“The company is still recovering, but it is important that we continue to invest and support our teams as we can. “

“I have spent over 20 years working for Pret and have spent a lot of time working in our stores, so know how important the mystery shopper bonus is to everyone and it is something that sets Pret apart from the competition. “

Pret blamed the wage cuts on declining sales during the pandemic, which remain “considerably below” previous levels. In some regions, its cafes make only a third of the income they recorded 18 months ago.

Pret has been among the companies hardest hit by the lockdowns, as changing spending habits and working from home have resulted in fewer commuters and buyers in the downtown areas where many of its branches are located.

The chain closed 74 UK locations last year and shareholders have provided £ 285million to support the struggling company.
