Wellow: Life in the “perfect” Somerset village which is a “best kept secret” Bath City News

The sun is still shining, the birds are still singing and the roses are still blooming in this picture postcard village near Bath where the “in” crowd lives.

You have perfect little whitewashed stone cottages, pink roses bursting above the palisade, dogs lazily sleeping in porches, Range Rovers on the road.

It might be an exaggeration, but you get the drift.

Wellow, near Bath, looks like something you would see on a box of chocolate.

It is the perfect English village and it is only a few miles from the center of Bath.

But you’ll feel like you’re millions of miles from reality, it’s Bath’s best-kept secret.

Because everyone who lives there wants it to be.

There is no reason to go to Wellow unless you live there, it is not on your way to anywhere.

Unless of course you want to visit the excellent pub, The Fox and Badger, right in the heart of the village.

On a Friday night, those who live in Wellow meet regularly for an unofficial weekly catch-up with the neighbors.

Everyone who lives there is lucky and they know it, because it is beautiful.

And you can be in the center of Bath in minutes, time to grab a bottle of cheeky Sancerre for an early evening supper across the road.

There is a wonderful community in Wellow, everyone helps each other out, there are a lot of clubs and organizations and religious events, they make things happen – together, but you have to be there to participate.

They even buy fuel oil together for their central heating in order to avoid the expense and the huge trucks that come down in their way.

And they’ve all teamed up to bring fast broadband to city executives who now work from their ivy-covered cottages.

Wellow is a lovely place, a truly beautiful place with great houses and gardens, a great pub, fantastic walks and a pony trekking center which has taught many little Bath darlings the gentle art of horseback riding.

There is a lovely walk down Wellow de Bath, a beautiful tree-lined hill revealing speckled sunlight taking you into the valley where the village is located.

Parking can be a problem during peak times, the Fox and Badger is a very popular pub which is not surprising as the food is great.

Their Sunday roast is to die for.

The owners, who also run the very popular White Hart in Widcombe, do a great job of making this old pub the center of the village.

There are wonderful walks around Wellow, which you can follow with a hearty pub lunch and a pint of real ale.

It is renowned for being a popular but self-sufficient village, but well worth the scenic drive.
