Wrightbus has announced the creation of 300 new jobs at its headquarters in Ballymena, Northern Ireland, and another 120 part-time positions are expected to become permanent.
The company plans to increase production numbers in 2022 after securing a series of orders from the UK and Ireland, closing a remarkable turnaround after being bought out of administration in October 2019.
At this moment, Wrightbus only had 56 staff members; when the new roles are filled next year, there will be 930.
“This is a fantastic achievement, and few could have imagined it just a few years ago,” said Wrightbus general manager Neil Collins.
“Over the past two years, the company has not only been bought out on the brink, but has been reinvigorated and experienced a period of phenomenal growth.
“We launched the world’s first double-decker hydrogen bus, we launched the fastest double-decker electric bus on the market and we are now the only bus manufacturer in the UK to offer both a hydrogen product. and electric on the market. “
Wrightbus’s Streetdeck Hydroliner has a range of 280 miles and can be 90% refueled in eight minutes. As with other hydrogen vehicles, its only by-product is water.
Meanwhile, the Streetdeck Electroliner has a range of up to 200 miles, thanks to a 454 kWh battery, Wrightbus claiming a “best in class” charge time of three hours at a rate of 150 kW.
“The past two years have not been easy,” said Wrightbus owner Jo Bamford, who rescued the company in 2019. “We not only had to remove the company from administration, but we have also had to go through unprecedented time, due to the effects of the Covid 19 pandemic.
“We continue to invest not only in employees, but [also] in technological advancements that will keep our buses at the top of the industry.
