What is that?

The enduring popularity of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class is rooted in its combination of incredible rugged off-road utility with extravagant luxury. Basically, it’s the perfect choice if you desire a vehicle capable of traversing a post-apocalyptic wasteland that can give you a soothing back massage while doing so.

The second-generation G-Class (or G-Wagon, if you prefer) debuted in 2018 with the G350d and the top-of-the-line and slightly bonkers Mercedes-AMG G 63. This new G400d effectively replaced the G350d in the UK lineup as the entry level model in the lineup. Of course, entry-level is a relative term here: The G-Wagon’s combination of luxury and capacity comes at a price: the cheapest G400d will set you back £ 98,525, and our AMG Line Premium Plus test car. costs £ 115,995. Still, that helpfully lowers the £ 153,995 starting price of the 577bhp G63.

We tested the G400d in 2019, when the powertrain had yet to be confirmed for the UK market, but this is our first experience on UK roads. The diesel is a more elaborate version of the turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six used by the 350d. Using a multi-channel exhaust gas recirculation system and variable valve lift control, the G400d is tuned to deliver 326 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque, compared to the 282 hp and 443 lb-ft of the G350d.

What does it look like?

The G350d performed very well, but given the G-Class’s sizeable 2.5 tonnes weight, the extra horsepower is welcome. Power is delivered incredibly smooth and quiet at both low and high speeds, and the nine-speed automatic transmission is perfectly matched to the engine’s power map. It is capable of smooth and easy progression which belies the size and mass of the car.

You won’t forget the massive size of the G400d when you’re behind the wheel, either. It is, without a shadow of a doubt, a big car, and some small British roads will have a hard time containing. Fortunately, its classic square design means visibility is excellent, and a host of Mercedes driver assistance features make driving surprisingly easy.

We only had a limited capacity to test the off-road capabilities of the G400d, but based on our past experiences with the G-Class, there is no doubt about its capabilities. The automatic transmission offers low gear and three differential locks as standard, and the combination of a ladder frame chassis, 20-inch wheels, and advanced suspension (double wishbone front, multi-link at the rear) offers incredible capabilities.

Once you’ve struggled with the G400d’s heavy doors to climb inside, the cabin is a purely luxurious experience, especially under the guise of the AMG Line Premium Plus. The excellent infotainment system and digital dashboard are a welcome dose of modern technology in retro design, the interior trim is absolutely worthy of a £ 100,000 car and the audio system is excellent.
