Newhaven RNLI to feature in BBC documentary Two Saving Lives At Sea Brighton News

A NEW TV documentary will focus on a lifeboat crew in the weeks following the deaths of two fishermen who lost their lives at sea.

The courageous actions of the Newhaven RNLI team who conducted a major sea search for the three crew members of the Joanna C will be featured on the BBC’s Saving Lives at Sea next week.

Robert Morley and Adam Harper lost their lives after their 45-foot scallop vessel, registered in Brixham, sank in November last year.

Captain Dave Bickerstaff was pulled from the water by lifeboat crews, after being found hanging from a lifebuoy nearly four hours after the tragedy.

An episode of the BBC documentary will follow Newhaven RNLI as they respond to reports of another Brixham boat in trouble just a week after volunteers were involved in the search for the Joanna C.

Newhaven coxswain Lewis Arnold, who will feature in the episode, said, “We treat every service call with the same speed and focus.

“Some are of course more difficult than others, but when the pagers go off, the team has only one goal and that is to do the job to the best of our ability.”

Director of Rescue Operations Roger Cohen said the series is a great way to showcase the rescue work of RNLI volunteers.

He said: “Without the generous support and donations from the public we wouldn’t be able to save lives at sea and it’s great to be able to share what we do with our supporters from the comfort of their own homes.

Now in its sixth series, Saving Lives At Sea features the rescue work of RNLI crews and volunteer rescuers from the UK and Ireland.

The series will air on BBC Two on Tuesdays at 8 p.m., and will also be available on BBC iPlayer after the broadcast.

Real life-saving footage is accompanied by moving interviews with the crews and volunteer rescuers of the lifeboats alongside the people they rescue and their families.

The episode featuring Newhaven RNLI is scheduled to air on Tuesday, August 31.
