If you could rename the streets of Bedford, what would you call them? Bedford News

A pop-up art installation this weekend (September 3-5) asks the question: How would you rename the streets of Bedford?

The event – in Harpur Square – is your opportunity to find inspiring, ambitious and challenging street names.

It’s part of a project called The Desire Paths by Third Angel Theater Company – and is being run by Bedford Players Trust and The Place Bedford.

It is hoped that the free event will generate a high level of passenger interest, as the public is invited to add new names to a chalk map of the city.

Project Manager Alex Levene of Bedford Players Trust said: “We encourage all members of the Bedford community to come along and help us rename every road, street, avenue and cul-de-sac in Bedford.

“We have been waiting for three years to bring this fantastic opportunity to the city and share this chance with the locals.

“We are all proud of the city and its long and rich history, but deep down we secretly wish we could rename everywhere to be an optimistic vision for the future.

“We’re not going to put Bedford on the map – we’re going to put the map on Bedford.”

Elaine Midgley, Director of Bedford Creative Arts, said: “It will really get people thinking about the area they live in and the meaning of a name.

“We can’t wait to see what people have to say.”

The Bedford Borough Council provided financial support.
