Expansion in people
“We are constantly recruiting brilliant new senior engineers and technical talent, and the result will be a technical engineering depth in the company equal to, if not better, than any F1 team. We announce the hiring of new senior technical and engineering talent almost every week. “
The Silverstone-based team appear to have gotten into the habit of poaching Red Bull staff. Designer Andrew Alessi is the latest to leave Milton Keynes and new CTO Dan Fallows is also a Red Bull alumnus, while CTO Luca Furbatto has joined Alfa Romeo.
“We currently have around 500 employees. When I took over Force India [in 2018, renaming the team Racing Point], we had about 400. It’s not just quantity, it’s quality. In the short term, we plan to increase that number to around 800. ”
Expansion in space
“To find a home for these 800 people, we recently dug the ground in Silverstone for our new plant which will open in about 20 months. It will be over 200,000 square feet, purpose built. Moreover, in order to be able to fight consistently for the World Championships, we also need our own wind tunnel – another big expense, costing well over £ 150million, and we have already started the process. “
Earlier this year, Stroll said Aston Martin did not need its own wind tunnel, amid restrictions on use and its agreement to share Mercedes’ tunnel at nearby Brackley. Why turn around?
“Andy [Green, chief technical officer] changed his mind! He came back to me and said, “Listen, I realize that there is a potential for uptime and uptime that we currently have using the Mercedes tunnel. But if you really want to be world champion, that’s a tool we’ll need. It cost a little money, this change of mind. I was happy with his first concept.
