Conservative Alec Shelbrooke has called the Home Office a “shame” after days of confusion over the processing and issuance of paperwork that will allow those fleeing safe access to the UK.
The MP for Elmet and Rothwell told the House of Commons that the Home Office has been “cutting [the] legs” of people who want to help those who escape.
“I’m proud of my constituents who are stepping up to offer as much help as possible,” he said.
“I am proud of the Prime Minister for the way he is leading the world, but the Home Office is cutting their legs off and it is just not good enough.
“Does the Ministry of the Interior recognize that this is a war that has not been seen for 80 years in Europe?
“We do not want to stand in this House and listen to plans and processes, we want dates, we want action and the Ministry of the Interior must react much faster than it is doing and get to the point of people centers, process them. and put them.
“When the minister leaves the dispatch box, I ask him to go back to the Home Office and tell them to control themselves.”
Boris Johnson has said the UK will be generous to refugees, but there has been widespread criticism from both Conservative and Labor MPs about slow processing of documents.
There was confusion today over the opening of a new visa processing centre, previously thought to be in the planning near Calais, to prevent refugees from needing to travel to Paris or Brussels for appointments.
However, it has now been announced that the center will be in Lille, some 70 miles from Calais.
The Home Office revealed on Monday night that only 300 visas had been issued out of a total of 17,700 family scheme applications that were initiated, 8,900 of which were submitted.
In the House of Commons, Home Office minister Kevin Foster said the number of visas issued has since risen to more than 500, while the new processing center in Lille is expected to be ready in the next few weeks. 24 hours.
