Apple suffered a widespread outage, taking services such as Apple Music, iCloud and the App Store offline for some users and even affecting its internal corporate and retail systems.
The issues prevented company employees from working from home and prevented retail staff from completing tasks, workers said.
The outage hampered product repairs, exchanges and item pickups, and limited the ability of company employees to communicate and access internal websites.
Apple told staff the outage was due to issues with the domain name system, or DNS.
The company didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment, but confirmed the issues on its website, saying 15 services were down for “some users.” This included the App Store, Arcade, TV+, Music and Podcasts.
User complaints began to climb shortly after noon in New York, according to Downdetector, which tracks outages.
He reported issues with iMessage, the Apple Support app, Maps and the company’s online store.
Outages of this magnitude are rare for Apple, making a seamless customer experience a top priority.
However, problems were also affecting Amazon’s web services as well as Google and some mobile carriers in the United States on Monday.
Apple shares were little changed on Monday but have fallen nearly 8% this year.
