The new Toyota GR Corolla will be officially unveiled overnight, but new details released early by Toyota US confirm that it will use a heavily upgraded version of the Toyota GR Yaris powertrain.
The long-awaited entry to Toyota’s expanding Gazoo Racing performance lineup has previously been shown wearing the division’s multi-color camouflage and with its overall design largely obscured, but this latest footage shows it completely unboxed.
It features a much more aggressive body design in line with its performance, with an expansive grille, new hood vents, thick rear spoiler, flared arches and triple outlet exhausts the most obvious differentiators. compared to the standard Toyota Corolla. Performance alloy wheels and beefy brakes complete the visual overhaul, but unlike the hot Yaris it retains a pair of rear doors.
It uses the same powertrain as its Yaris sibling, but with power upped from 258bhp to 300bhp – making it more of a Volkswagen Golf R rival than the Volkswagen Golf GTI – and torque has also been increased slightly at 273 lb-ft.
Power is sent to both axles via a six-speed manual gearbox, as in the GR Yaris, with an IMT (Intelligent Manual Transmission) function that essentially serves as a rev-matching function for smoother downshifts. Meanwhile, the torque vectoring feature can vary power to the axles from 50/50 to 30/70 in either direction, to optimize traction in all conditions.
Toyota has yet to confirm performance details for the GR Corolla, but a 0-62 mph time of 5.0 seconds appears to be within reach.
A European launch has not been confirmed. All teasers – and these final details – so far come from the US, where the GR Yaris is not available, following the withdrawal of the standard Yaris from that market. More details will be given at the debut later tonight.
