Big Ben reveals £80m makeover UK News

Big Ben National Monument has finally freed itself from scaffolding as the refurbishment of the Elizabeth Tower is unveiled.

After five years and £80million, it looks like renovations to the monument are coming to an end as images shared on social media show the famous clock looking clean and shiny.

With a makeover highlighting the original design of the towers, including the clock hands and Roman numerals now painted blue while a gold exterior borders the famous clock face.

The initial response so far has been varied, with many saying they were “impressed” with the work.

As one Twitter user put it: “Impressed with the restoration work on the Elizabeth Tower in Parliament, which looked particularly beautiful in the spring sunshine.

Another user said, “It looks amazing and for those complaining about the price, it employed countless skilled workers and that’s what our tourists expect to see. (And me too)”

Not everyone shared the praise, however, with some saying the renovations were a “waste of money”.

One user said “I don’t like the upgrades to Big Ben. The ‘spray paint’ gold turned it from a Rolex to a Timex.”

While another user said: “£80m when prices rise, children sent to school without food, healthcare on their knees and people unable to heat their homes. But at least Big Ben looks better and tourists will be happy.”

Big Ben should be completely renovated and ring again this summer.
