New 2023 Indi One EV: Tesla Model Y rival opens orders Car News

Despite the emphasis on infotainment, the AWD Indi One is no slouch, accelerating from rest to 60 mph in a claimed 4.2 seconds for the top model, which has 470 hp and a top speed of 130 mph. The air-sprung chassis is one of many areas of the car where Indi has enlisted the expertise of external consultants and suppliers, such as Tata and seat specialist Faurecia.

Q&A – Andre Hudson, Head of Design, Indi EV

Former GM and Hyundai designer Andre Hudson joined Indi EV three years ago and oversaw the design of the Indi One

What was the inspiration for the styling of the Indi One?“Aesthetically it was about trying to feel like a piece of digital hardware. A lot of electric vehicles have gone in a very luxurious and sculptural direction. But on this car, [the styling] is a bit cleaner, pure and simple. Details like the lighting and the Indi logo feel like an extension of that computer circuitry at its heart.”

How did you handle the engineering work?“We have a small core team in Los Angeles. Development managers in each area worked with engineering partners around the world in areas such as chassis design, lighting systems and the structure of the We developed the battery modules and pack in-house under the guidance of Tom Gage, who was involved early on at Tesla.”

Indi EV wants to go from foundation to production in six years. Is this only possible with an EV?“The beauty of an electric vehicle is that you can bring a lot of off-the-shelf components. Parts for the suspension, or electric drive units (EDUs), are big development parts, but you can buy components already validated and tested.

If not, how did you save time?We used proven technologies [in our design]. Some of our start-up counterparts, particularly on the West Coast, have developed EDUs [electric drive units], or try a different architecture, or a seating configuration or seats. This means that you are starting from scratch in development and validation and many problems can arise along the way. If you use proven technology and focus on your core user experience, you can condense development time.
