The organizers have already received entries from overseas, including Canada, and they are now inviting jam makers across Britain to get involved by entering a jar of their jam in the World Jam Awards from Wednesday, May 4.
Entrants have until Friday, August 12 to enter one of eight categories that include drunkenness for entries that include alcohol; 20 and under for the next generation of curators; Exotic for jams that test the judge’s palate; and Anything but Jam, a category reserved for those who get into pickles, relish, curd or jelly.
The World Jam Awards will be judged by Michelin-star chef Andrew Pern and his team from The Star at Harome on Tuesday September 25 at Helmsley Walled Garden in the North York Moors National Park. Visitors are invited to visit the garden to view the finalists and winners once judging is complete.
The awards were originally scheduled to take place in 2020, but the competition and event were canceled due to the Covid pandemic.
Entry details, including drop-off points for competitor jam entries, can be found on the World Jam Festival & Awards website here. Awards organizer Anna Lupton, of Carr House Farm Bed and Breakfast in Ampleforth, said: The awards taking place and having already generated interest overseas is really encouraging.
“Particularly post-lockdown, when more and more people have discovered the delights of making their own jam and with a growing focus on reducing food waste by preserving fruits and vegetables, we hope to engage with a group of new curators passionate.
“The categories are designed to reflect the wide range of jam enthusiasts, from commercial businesses, professional chefs and people growing their own fruits and vegetables for home canning to those who simply enjoy making jam as a hobby. -weather.”
