Geambasu, 47, of Higher Kingston, Yeovil, pleaded guilty to attempting to drive a vehicle after consuming excessive alcohol on November 6 when he appeared before magistrates in Somerset.

Prosecutor Emma Lenanton said locals heard a car crash in Summerhouse Terrace at 9pm and when a witness went to investigate they became concerned for the accused who was rocking from side to side.

“The witness called the police and Geambasu was seen getting back into the car and sitting in the driver’s seat,” she said. “He then attempted to drive the vehicle away, but was unable to do so.

“In a plea accepted by the court, he told police he had been drinking with friends and his friend, who was sober, offered to drive him home in his car, but then had an accident. and fled.

“Geambasu got out of the car, then sat in the driver’s seat and decided to move the vehicle (which was later written off) and attempted to drive.”

The court also heard that the defendant felt it was necessary to move the car at the time because other vehicles needed to drive around it, but acknowledged that it was in a dangerous condition.

However, he admitted other motorists were still able to navigate it successfully.

Speaking through an interpreter, Gemambasu said he was sorry for the offense and regretted trying to pull the car away from the spot.

He was given a 28-month driving ban and ordered to pay £620 in costs and a victim fine surcharge of £95.
