A 36-year-old man was sentenced to six years for violently assaulting and harassing two women.
Orville Anderson Burgess, of De Parys Avenue, was found guilty of two counts of ABH, criminal damage and harassment at Luton Crown Court, two of which will be served on licence.
In the early hours of Sunday, September 12, 2021, police received a frantic phone call from the two women saying they had both been assaulted by Burgess. Both victims had a relationship with him before and were in tears and extremely panicked.
The court heard that the day before the incident, Burgess continuously texted and called one of the victims asking to meet him.
In one of the messages, Burgess told the victim that he had “eyes on her everywhere,” leading the victim to suspect that Burgess was watching her.
He continued to bombard her with texts and calls in an attempt to get her to meet. He threatened her if she didn’t come to his house, he would come to his address where she lived with her children.
To keep Burgess from showing up, she agreed to meet him at his apartment. But as soon as she entered, Burgess grabbed her by the throat and threw her to the ground before continuing to assault and threaten her.
The victim said she genuinely believed Burgess was going to kill her and she couldn’t stop thinking about what he would do with her body.
Moments later, the second victim knocked on his front door. This victim was also one of his former companions. Burgess grabbed her and pushed her to the ground.
The two women eventually managed to flee to safety where they called the police. The second victim told police how Burgess had been physically and emotionally abusive throughout their relationship.
In court Friday, April 29, Burgess was classified as a “danger to all future partners” and in addition to six years in prison, he received a restraining order from contacting either of the victims.
Detective Constable Joanna Tyrrell said: ‘Burgess is an extremely violent and controlling man who violently harassed and assaulted both victims causing them to fear for their lives.
“Behaviour like this will not be tolerated in our communities and we will do everything in our power to ensure that dangerous perpetrators of domestic violence like Burgess are brought to justice for their despicable and life-destroying behavior.
“These women have lived in fear for so long because of his behavior and actions and I welcome the sentencing by the judge.
“I would like to commend both victims for their courage throughout the legal process.”
