A Mercedes-AMG electric concept car is due to be unveiled next week, giving hints of a production model that is expected to launch in 2025.
The revelation, made by Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius at the Financial Times’ Future of the Car Summit, came as he outlined Mercedes’ plans to develop electric-only car platforms from 2025 and to only offer electric cars for sale as long as market conditions permit.
“Next week we’ll show what the world of electric performance will look like when it’s made by AMG,” said Kalenius.
“It just came out of the press for you today, so stay tuned for some announcements we’ll make next week. We’ll give you a look at how AMG performs as an all-electric.”
No technical details of the model were revealed beyond having “fully dedicated electric architecture from scratch”, but the intimation was that the car will act as a halo for the performance brand’s electric future. .
Last year, Mercedes announced it would launch three electric-only platforms in 2025 as it sought to “go all out” on electric. Kalenius described it today as a key step “to make the electricity market, not to wait for it to come”.
Mercedes estimates that its investments in electric vehicles between 2022 and 2030 will amount to more than 40 billion euros (£34 billion).
Last year, the company’s chief operating officer and head of R&D, Markus Schäfer, confirmed that AMG variants of all EQ models will be developed.
