The Queen is to miss the official opening of Parliament and the Prince of Wales will read the Queen’s Speech on her behalf, Buckingham Palace has announced.
It is only the third time the Queen has missed the chance in her 70-year reign.
A new Letters Patent authorized by the Queen was issued to cover the official opening delegating to Councilors of State the royal function of opening a new session of Parliament.
In this case, it allows Charles and William to exercise this function jointly. No other functions have been delegated by the Queen.
The decision was made today.
The episodic mobility issues are believed to be a continuation of the issues the queen has suffered since the fall.
The Queen would have a busy schedule in Windsor this week with a call with Australia beginning on Monday, and a scheduled virtual Privy Council and telephone audience with the Prime Minister on Wednesday.
She is expected to undertake private engagements later in the week.
Buckingham Palace releases Queen update ahead of Queen’s Speech
Buckingham Palace said in a statement: “The Queen continues to experience episodic mobility issues and, in consultation with her doctors, has reluctantly decided that she will not attend the State Opening of Parliament tomorrow.
“At Her Majesty’s request and with the agreement of the relevant authorities, the Prince of Wales will read the Queen’s Speech on behalf of Her Majesty, also in the presence of the Duke of Cambridge.”
What to expect from the Queen’s Speech
The speech is written by ministers and details the government’s plans for new laws.
It was to be read by the Queen in the House of Lords as part of the Opening Ceremony of Parliament.
Buckingham Palace has confirmed that the Queen will not perform her duties herself for just the third time in her reign.
If she couldn’t attend, the Prince of Wales would likely do so instead.
