Volkswagen revives Scout name for EV pickup and SUV duo Car News

Volkswagen has announced plans to launch two new rugged electric 4x4s in the United States, with a pickup truck and an SUV slated for production in 2026.

Both cars will be designed and manufactured in the United States, with the first prototypes due to be unveiled next year. Volkswagen will also relaunch the Scout off-road brand it acquired last year. The moniker has remained dormant since International Harvester, the SUV’s original manufacturer, retired the model in 1980.

Volkswagen says the Scout brand will be formed later this year. It will be independent from the main Volkswagen brand and will be “built on a new technical platform concept” which will bring “a new pick-up and [rugged SUV] credibility” beyond the current Volkswagen model range. This suggests that the MEB architecture currently used for Volkswagen electric vehicles will not be adopted.

“The company that we will create this year will be a separate unit and brand within the Volkswagen Group which will be managed independently,” said Volkswagen Group CFO Arno Antlitz.

“This aligns with the group’s new leadership model – small units that act with agility and have access to our technology platforms to leverage synergies.”

The company is aiming for a 10% market share of the rugged SUV (R-SUV) and pickup truck segments in the United States.

“Following Volkswagen’s successful turnaround in the US, we are now seizing the opportunity to further strengthen our position in one of the most important growth markets for electric vehicles,” said Volkswagen Group CEO Herbert Diess.

“Electrification offers a historic opportunity to enter the very attractive pickup and R-SUV segment as a group, underlining our ambition to become a relevant player in the US market.”
