Where to see the Queen’s Baton relay route in the North East ahead of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games UK News

The Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games has unveiled the highly anticipated route the Queen’s Baton Relay will take across the North East and the rest of England this summer.

Traveling by land, air and sea, more than 180 communities in England will experience the Queen’s Baton on a 2,500 mile (4,000 kilometer) route.

From vibrant cities and historic market towns to rolling countryside and rugged coastline, the Baton will head as far south as Cornwall and as far north as Northumberland.

In the North East, the Queen’s Baton will visit:

  • Thursday July 14 – Saltburn-by-the-Sea, Redcar, Middlesbrough, Stockton-on-Tees, Darlington, Durham, Seaham and Sunderland.
  • Friday July 15 – South Shields, Whitley Bay, Blyth, Alnwick, Gateshead and Newcastle.

Highlights of the two days will see the Baton traveling by speedboat in Stockton-on-Tees, visiting skateboarders in Whitley Bay, abseiling from a wind turbine in Blyth Harbour, as well as visiting the Angel of the North .

Birmingham 2022 is hosting the 16th official Queen’s Baton Relay – a journey that brings together and celebrates communities across the Commonwealth, in the lead up to the Games. In England, the Queen’s Baton Relay will provide communities with the opportunity to experience the buzz and excitement of Birmingham 2022 as the 11 days of sporting spectacle draw ever closer.

The Queen’s Baton Relay is set to travel across England for a total of 29 days, culminating in the Birmingham 2022 Opening Ceremony on July 28, 2022.

Kicking off on Thursday June 2, the Baton will spend four days in London, coinciding with the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee weekend, celebrating the Queen’s 70th birthday as monarch and head of the Commonwealth. Le Baton will then resume his international journey visiting the Falkland Islands, Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man, before visiting the home countries of Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales.

He returns to England on Monday July 4 to begin a 25-day tour of the regions.

From sports days with local schools to community festivals, people will be able to experience the Baton in many ways. Members of the public are encouraged to get involved in the celebrations and welcome the arrival of the Baton, taking the opportunity to experience the buzz of Birmingham 2022 in their community.

The Birmingham 2022 website will provide information on events and where to plot the course.

Thousands of baton bearers, each with inspiring backgrounds and stories, will have the honor of carrying the baton on the journey across England, including those named in recognition of their contributions to their local community, whether in sport, education, the arts, culture or charity. Between 40 and 130 baton bearers will carry the baton each day, and the relay will reach hundreds of villages, towns and cities during its tour of the country.

Birmingham 2022 chief executive Ian Reid said: “As the Baton traveled across the Commonwealth, we worked closely with local authorities in England to design a route that engages hundreds of communities, passing sporting venues, historic sites, local schools and areas of outstanding natural beauty.Yet the Queen’s Baton Relay is much more than just a journey.

“It symbolizes the connection of people from all corners of the Commonwealth, celebrates the Batonbearers who take on challenges and marks the countdown to the biggest sporting event in West Midlands history. And as the Baton return to England for the last stage, 71 nations and territories will have already experienced the magic that goes with it.

“We hope communities across the country will join in the excitement, see events near them, line the streets to cheer on our amazing flag bearers and celebrate the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.”
