What happened to the cast of Eldorado? EastEnders’ tragic death and ‘second chance’ as soap lands on BritBox UK News

Like many programs it arrived with a lot of hype, but the sun quickly set on BBC soap opera Eldorado as the ratings plunged. However, in a big intrigue, he is now back on television three decades later.

The big-budget show, which launched in 1992, would have cost the broadcaster in the region £10million to launch, but, having invested all that money, with a lot of it in a ‘mini-town’ purpose-built near Marbella, it was only on screen for 156 episodes, a fraction of the output of the BBC’s long-running soap juggernaut EastEnders.

What was supposed to be a sunny hit for the channel quickly became like the vacation package from hell as it was panned by TV critics and the ratings fell off a cliff, dropping to just 2, 8 million, despite its prime time slot.

Some Eldorado viewers still have fond memories of the show, with one telling ChronicleLive, “…over the last few months it’s gotten really good. They had fired all the worst actors and characters and plots were really strong.

“They canceled it only because the BBC was really bothered by it. Anyway, I still watch it every once in a while and still enjoy it every time.”

With the scenery in Spain in shambles, many actors have left behind their acting days, but few remain on screen. And they are now seen on screen again, with Eldorado now on BritBox to stream.

Jesse Birdsall – Marcus Tandy

Eldorado’s premier wheel dealer and sleazy lothario, Marcus was never far from trouble in Spain and had the honor of delivering the soap opera’s final line before the credits rolled for the final time.

Preparing to sail into the sunset, Marcus told his girlfriend Pilar, “You can’t trust anyone these days, can you?”

Since being on Eldorado, Jesse had a starring role in the oft-overlooked BBC adventure drama Bugs, before switching channels to play Roger Webb in Footballers’ Wives.

Manager of the fictional team Earls’ Park, Roger was married to Gillian Taylforth’s on-screen alias, Jackie Pascoe.

Jesse bid farewell to the wives of footballers as, after being shot and blinded, Roger fell down an elevator shaft to his death.

More recently Jesse appeared as the villainous Fraser Black in Hollyoaks but was also killed off in the Channel 4 soap opera.

Polly Perkins – Trish Valentine

One of Eldorado’s most colorful characters, cabaret singer Trish had an eye for the youngster and fans will remember her relationship with baby boy Dieter.

Polly returned to El Dorado in 2013 and was devastated by its ghost town status, telling a BBC reporter: “It’s been let down and ruined – I think it’s a terrible shame, what a waste.

“It’s not like it’s just a landscape – it’s real houses.”

Since her days at Eldorado, which saw her dance Whitney Houston’s I Wanna Dance With Somebody on a small stage, Polly, now 78, is best known for appearing on EastEnders as the half-sister of Dot Rose in 2011 and 2012.

Derek Martin – Alex Morris

Speaking of EastEnders, many BBC viewers will have completely forgotten that Albert Square’s own Charlie Slater was in Eldorado.

Prior to joining EastEnders as a taxi driver and dad to Mo, Lynne and Kat, Derek appeared on many well-known programs including Upstairs Downstairs, Minder and Only Fools and Horses.

Now 88, he made his EastEnders debut in 2000 and, although kicked out in 2010, he later returned for numerous episodes in 2011, 2013 and 2016, his last episode seeing Charlie die after a heart attack.

Away from the Square, Derek appeared on Celebrity Coach Trip alongside Nick Cotton actor John Altman in 2012.

Sandra Sandri – Pilar Montero

Sandra was only 20 when she shot to fame as Pilar on Eldorado, after starring in the 1990 movie Boom Boom.

His last notable appearance according to IMDB was in 2004 in the movie Searching for Love.

Roger Walker – Bunny Charlson

Roger was famous for playing Bunny, who featured in one of Eldorado’s most discussed early storylines, when he arrived in Spain with 17-year-old bride Fizz.

Prior to Eldorado, Roger had appeared on countless shows including The Darling Buds of May, Bodger and Badger and Emmerdale and since ending he has starred in Casualty, Peak Practice, The Bill and EastEnders.

Leslee Udwin – Joy Slater

Trish’s best friend and bar owner Joy hasn’t always had it easy with Eldorado.

Away from Eldorado, Leslee set up her own production company – Assassin Films – with some notable hits under her belt, including East is East, Mrs Radcliffe’s Revolution and West is West.

East is East won the Alexander Korda Award for Best British Film at the BAFTA Awards and was declared Best Comedy Film at the British Comedy Awards.
