Apex Corner: 1,500 sign TfL petition amid roadworks ‘chaos’ UK News

Around 1,500 people have signed a petition calling for an end to ‘unnecessary’ lane closures at one of North West London’s busiest junctions.

Drivers and residents have faced delays at Apex Corner in Edgware while Transport for London carries out planned repairs to the bridge over the A41.

The work, which began in April and lasts until August, has caused “chaos” and traffic jams since a new phase of work began on May 10.

According to a petition set up in recent days, the lane closures around Apex Corner have caused “serious disruption”, especially during the school race.

It says: “Teachers, school staff, students, parents, carers, school bus drivers and transport assistants have journeys delayed by up to 90 minutes due to multiple road and lane closures. .

“Children going to special schools in the area, many of whom have medical needs…spend two and a half hours on a journey that typically takes 45 minutes.”

Parents have also raised concerns about students being late for exams.

The petitioner has asked TfL to carry out the work during “more reasonable hours”, such as when the school holidays start at the end of July.

Thousands of drivers crossing Apex Corner were also caught up in delays on the A41 and A1, along with residents of Mill Hill and Edgware.

People living near Apex Corner are also fighting with TfL to reopen Pike Road, near KFC, giving them access to Apex Corner.

The only choice they have at the moment is to take the A1 to Borehamwood and sit in heavy traffic back to Apex Corner.

After being inundated with complaints, TfL said on Friday it was considering whether it could make ‘changes’ to Pike Road, but appeared to rule out reducing lane closures, which it says are in place to ensure the traffic on the Apex Corner roundabout is at a “safe capacity”.

Nick Fairholme, TfL’s Director of Projects and Programmes, added: “We are sorry for any disruption this work has caused to people in the area and we are working to complete it on schedule later this summer.”
