Green Flag warns Jubilee parties ‘could wreak havoc on drivers’ over bank holiday weekend UK News

It is estimated that 133,000 UK roads will be inaccessible due to street parties. Drivers must therefore be prepared and plan for congestion.

A poll of 2,000 UK adults commissioned by the Green Flag relief society indicated that 8% of people live on a road hosting a council-approved street party over the blockbuster bank holiday weekend.

The poll also found that an additional 7% of respondents said their street was planning an unofficial party.

The most popular day for Jubilee street parties is expected to be Friday (35% of those scheduled).

Meanwhile, a quarter (25%) of planned street parties are to take place on Saturdays, with 15% taking place on Thursdays and 12% on Sundays.

The survey, which was conducted between April 29 and May 3, also revealed that 13% of people did not know which day the Jubilee holiday would be on their route.

Green Flag estimated that five million people will go on vacation or day trip during this period.

The roadside assistance provider therefore warned that these street parties “could cause havoc for drivers”.

The company’s chief commercial officer, Mark Newberry, said: ‘The extra day off means many of us will be planning trips to make the most of the four-day weekend.

“We want to make sure everyone can enjoy the celebrations without added stress or complications, so we urge drivers to check their route for any road closures and to be aware of any obstacles or pedestrians that may be in the street.

“Drivers should ensure they are ready for the trip by checking their vehicle thoroughly before setting off and preparing for any breakdowns.”
