First ride: Aston Martin Valkyrie AMR Pro review Car News

I am doubly blessed. Or maybe doubly cursed. Because I once took a ride in a Valkyrie, sitting next to Aston CEO Tobias Moers, who later died, in one at the Goodwood Festival of Speed last year. It was hugely exciting, but it went at a pace suited to the wet conditions and the car’s lack of traction control. But in Homestead the sun is blazing and the TC apparently works. Despite this, the naturally aspirated Cosworth V12 will be in its 800bhp setting – plenty for the short straights of the inside course, Priaulx reckons – but still 200bhp from full power.

Entry is an inelegant process, and once in the snug cabin, I’m forced to adopt an offset position so that Priaulx still has room to turn the yoke-like steering wheel. But, unlike Goodwood’s car, the Pro’s air conditioning at least tries to work, and the view through the screen isn’t obscured by multiple display screens. It’s not comfortable, but I doubt there will ever be a shortage of volunteers willing to cram in to watch the show.

The AMR Pro starts rolling under pure electric power, with the V12 kicking off with a bang when the car hits around 15 mph. There’s a brief chance of experiencing a low-end buzz as we exit pit lane, but from then on he spends the entire four-lap stint close to his red line of 11,000 rpm. Predictably, the noise is wild, even through a tight-fitting helmet, but there’s less vibration than I remember from the regular Goodwood car.
