“The top half-dozen will be vying for selection,” Worksop-based Thompson coach John Henson said.

“All the competitors in this race have a chance to make the relay team, it just depends on who is the best performer that day.”

The final selection will be made after the UK Championships next month.

He represented Great Britain in the 4x400m for the first time at the World Indoor Championships in Athletics in Belgrade, Serbia a month later.

He was also part of the men’s 4x400m relay team that clocked the best time of the season in his series – and could yet represent his country at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham and the European Championships in Munich, Germany.

“It’s still on,” John said of the target.

“That’s what we’re aiming for and we’re on track at the moment.”

Thompson missed the indoor season to focus on training for a potentially busy summer.

He marked his return to the track with a 400m time of 46.89 – 0.79 seconds short of his personal best – at the Charlie Kelly Speed Series in Coventry earlier this month.

John added: “It was a good start for him, we worked on speed a bit throughout the winter and spring.”

Thompson will also represent England in the men’s 4x400m at the Loughborough International on Sunday.

Sheffield City’s Joe Dunderdale will compete in the javelin at the same event.
