Police are investigating allegations that a van driver ran over ducklings crossing the road Bath City News

Police are investigating allegations that a van driver killed three ducklings after other vehicles pulled over to let a family of ducks cross the road.

Staffordshire Police said in a statement that officers were looking into allegations relating to an incident on Friday in Trentham, a southern suburb of Stoke-on-Trent.

The force learned of the incident following a social media post from a witness, which included images of the ducklings lying on the road. Steven Walley wrote in a Facebook post he asked people to share: “I have just been driving on the A34 at the Trentham Gardens roundabout when a family of seven ducklings were crossing the road.

“All traffic stopped to let them cross but, disgustingly, this van driver, after stopping initially, could not wait the five seconds it would have taken to let them cross and rolled right over it, crushing three of them.”

Mr Walley said he then followed the van to a nearby parking area, where he had what he described as a ‘very heated conversation’ with the driver. Police said they were trying to establish whether any offenses had been committed under the Wildlife and Countryside Act.

A statement posted to Twitter said: “We are aware of a message circulating about a van driver allegedly killing ducklings in Trentham. We have contacted the author of the message and are establishing potential offenses under the Wildlife and Countryside Act.

“We understand that this is an emotional issue for many people and we ask that you do not take matters into your own hands.”

The original social media post about the incident has been shared over 2,500 times.
