“Besotted” Graham Mansie stalked his victim over a four-month period between July and October of last year. He also treated her to a drink of her own, showered her with unwanted gifts, and even appeared in the halls of her college in York.
He found her and her roommates on WhatsApp posing as a freshman. She also lost hundreds of pounds trying to pay dark web scammers to hack into her social media accounts and see what she was up to.
While he was supposed to focus on teaching her to drive, Mansie praised the young woman, saying she was his “favorite.”
The driving instructor also gave another student a gift bag to give to the teen that contained a keychain with eight personalized charms and a card describing the victim as “kind” and “incredible.”
The victim eventually became so concerned about his inappropriate behavior that she told her mother, but he continued to harass her. He was only arrested after showing up in York.
Mansie, from Beckenham in southeast London, was reported to police last October and arrested a month later.

He pleaded guilty to a stalking charge at an earlier hearing last month. His eight-week prison sentence was suspended for one year.
They told him to complete 30 days of rehab and visit the Stalking Threat Assessment Center for help.
He was also banned from contacting the victim for the rest of his life and told to pay the court £300 in costs and a victim surcharge of £128.
Bromley Magistrates Court has been told he has already breached her bail conditions twice by contacting her on Instagram and WhatsApp.
On the second occasion, he sent her a message saying “you killed me” after a report of his plea hearing appeared in the media.
The victim, who has now turned 18, said in a shocking statement read from behind a screen in court: “Your crimes have affected me mentally and physically. I’m scared and I think about it every day. What worries me most is the uncertainty of not knowing what she will do since she has come to York to try to find me.
“I stopped wearing my coat and cut my hair while congratulating myself on both of them. I often can’t sleep and I feel very vulnerable because I have been away from my family.
“I am afraid that it will come and break into where I live. Her message on April 22 left me distraught and upset as I worried if I would continue to default on her bail.
“I am concerned that I will return to my university accommodation and I am very concerned for my safety. People in my university accommodation have been affected by this. They are absolutely petrified and worried about his appearance.
“I have missed two weeks of teaching and it has negatively impacted my studies and my mental health. I’ve lost my appetite and the doctors are concerned about my weight and diet.”
Denise Clewes, a prosecutor, said the couple met in 2020 and their contact was initially normal until she started lessons again in April last year when the lockdown was relaxed.
She added, “He described her as his ‘favourite.’ She created a TikTok account with a love heart emoji. He made comments about wanting to be in a relationship with her and talked about going for a drink with her.
“He created an Instagram account that contained posts like ’30 days until I see you.’ She realized it was him and he said ‘ignore me, it was silly’. On July 16, her friend had her driving test. He gave eight personal items to her.
“He joked about having a file on her. She told her mom about it. She said in a message to her mother that she wanted her to stop teaching her “is it because I love her?” In September 2021 he moved to York. He managed to join a WhatsApp Group from his residence with an 18-year-old boy profile.
“He became friends with all his classmates. He used the dark web to ask people to hack into his private messages to see what he was up to. He lost hundreds of pounds trying to do this. On October 31, 2021, he traveled to York by train. He walked out of his residence, but did not go inside.
“His dad called him saying ‘you’re a pervert.’ He replied ‘I love your daughter, she is 18 years old’. His father called the police and the defendant was arrested on November 3.”
In mitigating circumstance, his attorney, Piers Kiss-Wilson, said his client is repentant and has no prior convictions.
She added: “He completely misunderstood her friendly platonic interaction.”
District Judge Venessa Lloyd told him: “His behavior caused a great deal of distress, not only for his victim, but also for his parents and fellow students. She doesn’t return your affections. You’re shaking your head now, I hope you accept it.
“The last message you sent him seemed to imply that things were his fault. None of that was his fault. There is no need for you to never have contact with her. She is just beginning her adult life and she does not include you.”
After he was found guilty…
