Attention buyer

Engine: Servicing the 2.7-litre V6 will cost around £150 for interim service, £320 for a full two-year service. Timing belts and tensioners should be changed every 100,000 miles or seven years. Check the plastic housing of the thermostat, which can crack and cause a coolant leak. If the engine temperature light comes on, it’s too late. Rob Moss says the engines are strong but there have been issues with the EGR valve, which can stick or fail. Turbos can also be problematic. An engine management light could signal an EGR or turbo problem.

Suspension: Chassis issues are related to worn lower front ball joints (prior to a 2009 redesign). Any issues with the suspension could land you big four-figure repair bills. A front suspension unit now costs around £500. It is crucial that diagnostics be run on any C6 you are considering purchasing.

Wheels, tires and body: Don’t worry about the alloy wheels, but the bodywork can suffer from corrosion around the rear window frame. The trim fasteners and many components of the pop-up rear spoiler are subject to surface rust. Check that the spoiler works as it should.

Brakes: The brakes are up to snuff, but there have been recalls related to the vacuum circuit, which could lead to the loss of power assist. The ABS sensors can be problematic and the rear brakes can seize up, due to the reaction of the alloy and steel. Offset cleaning and coating should solve this problem. Tire pressure sensors are notorious for failing.

Interior: The cabin wears reasonably well. The air conditioning needs regular maintenance: expect a regassing every two years. Steering wheel switches can cause cruise control to fail. Check that all electrical functions and controls work. If all dashboard lights are off, check that the “dark” button has not been pressed. Check the power rear seats and steering wheel adjusters.

Also to know

Any underhand knocking in the front on pre-2009 cars indicates worn bushings and ball joints on the lower control arms. You cannot buy a ball joint alone from Citroën, but there are aftermarket options.
